How to teach the five-paragraph essay in your homeschool • WriteShop
Five-paragraph essays are a specific writing assignment format that dictates a one-paragraph introduction, a three-paragraph body and a one-paragraph conclusion. Five-paragraph essays are a good introduction into the essay-writing format and can help middle-schoolers get accustomed to organizing their thoughts in this format. When choosing a good topic for a five-paragraph essay, consider your personal interests and the topics you've always wanted to know more about. One type of essay that can easily fit the five-paragraph format is a report. For this type of essay, you will choose a single topic, do some basic research about it and synthesize your findings in your writing. Reports include only relevant facts about the topic, not opinions or arguments.

Introducing the Five-Paragraph Essay
At first I was skeptical in the extreme about using the terms bing, bang, and bongo to represent the parts of the essay's outline. This gave my students a stronger command of the same concept faster. The powerpoint is, to be honest, too long I didn't find much of an effective way to get through the objective in a robust way that was shorter.
In middle school, students are expected to organize, synthesize, and take real ownership of their essays — no small task for kids who are struggling to balance schoolwork, social life, and raging hormones. But the five paragraph essay should make students feel more in control than ever before — if the thesis sentence doesn't have them stumped! Download Article Middle school students should be familiar with the format, but a back-to-school refresher couldn't hurt. The five paragraph essay should be made up of an introduction with a thesis, three body paragraphs supporting the thesis, and a conclusion. Ideally, students should be able to develop body paragraphs, each starting with a clear reason that proves the thesis, followed by three examples that back up each reason.
