Pedro Paramo is a novel about a boy named Juan who is on a mission to seek his dead mother 's revenge. Juan travels to Comala only to come across a dead ghost town populated by trapped wandering spirits, shadows, and echoes. Spirits are kept in Comala because of their sins, urge to repeat their past, and a corrupt priest. Since the towns sins are not forgiven they remain in Comala.

Analysis of "Pedro Paramo" Essay

In the novela Pedro Paramo, Juan Rulfo uses religion as a symbol that contradicts with the characters lack of morals and lack of faith. The town people of Comala are obsessed with the thought of afterlife, pray and attending church regularly, but these habits that have lost their true meaning. Father Renteria plays the God like figure, being that he is the only priest in the novel allowing. Throughout the novel, Pedro Paramo, the author Juan Rulfo uses imagery, conflict, foreshadowing and juxtaposition to comment on the corruption of organized religion in the world, particularly the Catholic Church. The small village where the novel is set, has become a prison for the souls who remain and the local Priest abuses his position of authority to decide who will be blessed and be released.
